Cooling interventions are routinely implemented to protect brain cells in clinical scenarios such as hyperthermia, cerebral trauma, and post-craniocerebral surgery. Traditional cooling modalities include ice pack cooling, alcohol sponge baths, and conventional physical cooling. Thermoelectric cooling is a refrigeration approach based on the thermoelectric effect, also referred to as thermoelectric refrigeration or thermoelectric cooling. The fundamental component of a thermoelectric cooler is a thermocouple pair, which is formed by connecting one p-type semiconductor element and one n-type semiconductor element in series.
When a direct current (DC) power supply is connected, the current flows from the n-type to the p-type element at the upper junction, triggering a temperature drop and heat absorption to form the cold side; at the lower junction, the current flows from the p-type to the n-type element, causing a temperature rise and heat release to form the hot side. Multiple thermocouple pairs are connected in series to construct a standard thermopile. With the assistance of various heat transfer components, the hot side of the thermopile continuously dissipates heat to maintain a stable temperature, while the cold side absorbs heat in the working environment to generate a low-temperature environment. This constitutes the working principle of thermoelectric cooling.
