Huajing Thermal Control explains the application of TEC temperature control in laser devices.
Temperature fluctuations in optical components have a significant impact on laser performance. Precise and stable temperature control is critical to maintaining laser emission performance at a specific wavelength.If a laser cannot maintain accurate wavelength and stable optical power over its wide operating temperature range, signal power fluctuations will occur, which may leak into adjacent wavelength channels and cause data loss or corruption during transmission.
For example, high-definition video and voice communications may become blurred and unstable. For critical applications such as autonomous driving or telemedicine, such problems can lead to even more serious consequences.
There are three main reasons for using TEC in optical devices:
The wavelength-temperature drift coefficient of a DFB laser is approximately 0.1 nm/℃.Within the operating temperature range of optical modules (0~70℃ for commercial applications), the wavelength drift of a DFB laser can reach 7 nm, which exceeds the channel spacing of many WDM systems and causes inter-channel crosstalk.
Therefore, for narrow-channel-spacing WDM systems such as DWDM, LAN-WDM, and MWDM, TEC temperature control is required to stabilize the output wavelength regardless of the laser chip used.
Certain optical devices achieve their best performance only under stable temperatures.For EML chips, the temperature drift coefficient of the DFB section is 0.1 nm/℃, while that of the EA section is 0.5 nm/℃, resulting in a serious thermal mismatch. Without TEC control, the optical power and modulation performance of EML chips degrade significantly at high temperatures.For SOA chips, temperature variations cause changes in the gain spectrum and fluctuations in thermal noise, so TEC control is generally essential.
For some high-power devices, passive cooling using high thermal conductivity materials can hardly meet heat dissipation requirements. Active cooling by TEC is necessary to achieve effective heat dissipation.
